Like hot wings, but want to go meatless? You might like this product. In our 'multi-eating habits' household, I'm always looking for meatless choices (for me) that I can prepare while fixing the 'meat all the way' versions for my husband.
This week, I tried a product that is fairly new at our grocery store (a month or so): classic style (meat-free) buffalo wings, by Gardein - garden protein, a company whose premise appears to be think green, eat green, feel good about eating well and making a difference in the environment. Sounds good to me! Click here to go to their website (I'm doing my own homework on this company... I'm liking what I see!).
COST: $3.99 for a package that contains 2.5 servings, 3.5 oz each.
APPEARANCE/TEXTURE: At quick glance, the meatless wings look similar to their 'real' counterparts, smothered in buffalo sauce, but mostly, they reminded me of the old McDonald's chicken nuggets (remember those??), both in shape and texture, when broken open. They're kind of spongy, like cooked tofu, and seem to soak up the buffalo sauce.
NUTRITIONAL INFO: Cllick here for the company's nutritional info for this product (reasonable, but a little high in sodium, which I didn't notice when I ate the wings*).
TASTE: Okay, here's the biggie, right? How did they taste? Well, I liked them quite a lot. Like tofu, the meatless wings seem to take on the flavor of what they're in, in this case, the buffalo sauce, which is, in my opinion, a little on the hot, spicy side... a good flavor w/ a kick (like wings should be!), so I wouldn't change that. I dipped (very lightly) in bleu cheese dressing (I wanted the full experience!).
VERDICT? Winner! I like these a lot, and will definitely purchase them again, maybe even for a party or get-together, for my vegetarian/mostly-vegetarian buddies. :-) 4 stars out of 5 (The package is a little small.)
Happy eating and cooking, friends.....
Robin
