You've heard the expression, "Measure twice, cut once," usually associated with building something. But, as foodies who love yummy, healthy food, we're also building - delicious dishes - that might just be bigger than we realize.....
How accurately can you 'eyeball' a correct portion size? For most of us, that's tougher than we think. In the U.S., where everything seems to be super-sized, we often miscalculate how much we're eating, and many times the portion is double or three times the true serving size. Don't believe me?? Test yourself. How'd you do?
I had to learn this lesson the hard way (which seems to be how I learn most of my best lessons!), when I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. I truly was 'eating like a boy!' As soon as I began measuring my food and taking out the refined stuff (white sugar, white flour, white rice, white bread - you get the idea), my weight dropped dramatically, 20 pounds in 4 months! I was shocked. And frankly, hungry for a while, until my body adjusted to improved, healthier eating habits. Now if I overeat, I feel sick and sluggish. Our bodies are amazing, and they do adapt.
So here's my tip of the day:
If you love to eat as much as I do, and weight loss or maintenance is an issue, buy a few basic measuring tools for your kitchen. You might have a scale to weigh yourself - why not have one in your kitchen to weigh your food? Buy one today. Nothing expensive. Nothing fancy. Something functional, easy to clean, easy to read, and takes up little space. A good set of measuring spoons and cups (dry ingredients) and a measuring cup for liquids -- also helpful.
Remember: "Measure twice........"
